If you have been to Johnson City, then chances are you have seen Buffalo Mountain. You can’t miss it since it is visible from almost every angle in the city. This beautiful masterpiece sits high above the city like a guard watching over his charge. This mountain is gorgeous all year round and has an amazing view just from the bottom alone. But if you're looking for a scenic hike in Johnson City, then you'll want to venture a little higher on Buffalo Mountain.
You will travel through some back roads not too far from downtown to get to the trailhead.
Fields and farmland will be surrounding you right before you turn to go into Buffalo Mountain Park. Once inside you are greeted with massive lush overgrowth that makes it feel like you have stepped into a rainforest. You will still technically be in the city, but other than the faint sound of a train in the distance you will feel miles away from everything.
There are plenty of trails to hike along on Buffalo Mountain but if you want these two gorgeous overlooks, you will want to follow the White Rock Loop Trail.
Not too far into the trail, you will see a sign for the Huckleberry Knob. This is the first overlook you will want to travel to. Only a couple yards off the White Rock Loop Trail are these amazing views of Johnson City and the surrounding mountains. This is a beautiful spot to take a break and enjoy the view. There are even benches to sit on if you would like.
Travel up a little further on the White Rock Loop Trail and you will see a sign for Sunset Point.
This is also another amazing overlook, but facing in a different direction. As you guessed, this is also a great place to see the sun setting in the valley below. Take a seat on the bench and soak it all in.
This hike is incredible with two simple spur trails to get in some beautiful views. If you want to put some more effort into your hike then continue on the White Rock Loop Trail to the Tip Top Trail.
Once you reach the summit you will then get two more bonus views from between the trees on the top. One faces the mountains and the other faces the city. There is also a nice picnic bench there for you to enjoy a snack and revel in conquering Buffalo Mountain.
Be on the lookout during your hike for interesting bugs or other wildlife like this beautiful salamander.
So whether you plan on hiking up for the two spur trail overlooks or continuing to see a total of four overlooks this mountain is an amazing hike in Johnson City. This trail is just a short drive from downtown, so you will want to take advantage of how close this mountain really is.
