Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Tennessee That’s Perfect for Summer
If an adventure by the water is what you want, then that's what you'll get by hiking this trail in Tennessee.
Tennessee is home to an abundance of hiking trails, especially when considering that half of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park lies within the state's boundaries. More than half a million acres of this mountainous national park offer endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. But what if you wanted to hike to a beach instead of the mountains? As a landlocked state, Tennessee doesn't have a coastline, but there are numerous lakes where you can go for a dip. If an adventure by the water is what you want, then that's what you'll get on the Point Trail and Island Loop Trail at Harrison Bay State Park. So, let's take a stroll and take a dip on this Tennessee beach hike this summer!
A popular state park due to its proximity to Chattanooga and visitor access to the Tennessee River and Chickamauga Lake, Harrison Bay State Park is 1,200 acres of outdoor bliss, attracting boaters, campers, hikers, swimmers, fishermen (and women), and golfers (yes, there's a golf course here!). So, hiking to a sandy lakeside beach is certainly possible at this state park, and one trail you can take is the Point Trail and Island Loop Trail.
At just 0.7 miles, the Point Trail and Island Loop Trail are considered easy by AllTrails' standards. This peaceful trail is family-friendly and, while also dog-friendly, Fido must remain on a leash. After strolling through woodlands with water views, you'll eventually encounter the sandy lakeshore. Although there is no designated swimming beach with lifeguards, you must remain vigilant, as boaters are present on the lake. You should especially keep an eye on your children at all times. However, it's an incredibly refreshing lake to take a quick dip, especially on a hot summer day!
For a short and sweet hike to the beach, I would consider wearing water shoes that can also be used for hiking, especially if you plan on wading or swimming. There's also a point where you have to wade through the water to the Island Trail portion of the loop. Don't forget your swimsuits and towels.
The next time you would like to hike to a body of water and go for a swim, visit Harrison Bay State Park to hike the Point Trail and Island Loop Trail. It's an excellent summer adventure!
