The State Park in Tennessee Where You’ll See Dozens of Bird Species in a Single Afternoon
Looking to enjoy nature and maybe spot a few of our feathered friends? Frozen Head State Park is home to dozens of bird species, including many you don't typically see in Tennessee.
Nowadays, it seems like just about everything costs an arm and a leg to enjoy, but there are still plenty of free things to do in Tennessee if you know where to look. One of my favorite things to do here is enjoy the outdoors. We've got a beautiful landscape in the the Volunteer State. Whether you love mountains, lakes, fields, or cities, there's something for everyone here. If you adore immersing yourself in nature, you might want to consider taking up bird-watching. It's a free hobby that doesn't require any special skills or equipment (though a pair of quality binoculars will certainly add to the experience) and it's such a great way to feel more connected with the world around us. We've got a number of amazing parks in Tennessee that are just perfect for bird-watching and one of the very best is Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg, TN. This magical preserve is home to so many fascinating critters, including plenty of our feathered friends.
Frozen Head State Park spans 24,000 acres and boasts some of the tallest mountains in Tennessee, including the peak that shares the park's name. It's an incredible hiking destination, and there are more than 80 miles of trails to explore here.
The park's varied landscape means there is a wide array of animal species that call this place home at some point during the year. This region of the Cumberland Mountains has been designated as an Important Bird Area because so many different species migrate through the area. You'll see species that are common in Tennessee, like brown thrashers and American robins, but Canada warblers, chestnut-sided warblers, and other rarer birds are often spotted along the trails that lie at higher elevations.
In all, more than 140 different species of birds have been seen in Frozen Head State Park throughout the year. Many of the species that pass through the park use it as nesting grounds, and it's important to remember to keep your distance to make sure that both you and wildlife stay safe.
Even if you're not particularly a fan of animals, just checking out the trails here is a grand adventure you'll never forget. I love the variety of hikes in this trail system, and whether you're looking for a challenging multi-day adventure or an easy trail the entire family can enjoy, you'll find it at Frozen Head State Park.
