Now that the weather is warm and a little more predictable, it is time to hit the wide-open road! With so many incredible South Dakota drives to choose from, however, where does one begin? We recommend starting with the aptly-named Wildlife Loop Road, which is arguably the most unforgettable drive in the Mount Rushmore State:
Located in Custer, the beautiful Wildlife Loop Road is exactly how it sounds - a stunning drive that is chock-full of wildlife sightings.
Tucked away inside the 100-square-mile Custer State Park, Wildlife Loop Road winds through some of the parks' most jaw-dropping scenery, including the Black Hills landscape that you have to come to know and love.
During your journey, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a variety of 4-legged animals who call Custer home!
From pronghorn to elk to deer to bison, there is never a shortage of animals to see during your drive along the Loop.
In addition to the many 4-legged creatures that call the area home, the Wildlife Loop Road also houses various birds ranging from large eagles to much tinier species.
Since wildlife call the area home, be prepared to drive slowly along Wildlife Loop. The recommended speed limit along the road is 25 miles per hour or less.
Admission to Custer State Park is $20 per vehicle for a temporary, 7-day license.
