This Little-Known Lake Is Perfect For Easy Fishing, Kayaking, And Bird Watching In South Carolina

When you're in the mood for fishing, kayaking, or bird watching, chances are the Adams Grist Mill Lake isn't at the forefront of your mind for potential spots to choose from. In fact, this body of water is also referred to as a pond, with even the state park website using the terms lake and pond interchangeably. This little-known lake is found in Goodale State Park in Cheraw, South Carolina, and it's the perfect spot for recreation in a less traveled area for a slower pace and quieter experience.

The Adams Grist Mill Lake was built during the Civil War era as a mill pond, which resulted in it being a more shallow body of water, creating the conditions for the picturesque cypress trees that grow up through the water.

Its lack of depth is another reason it's considered to be more of a pond than a lake, technically; although, there's very little difference between lakes and ponds from a regulatory standpoint – hence, the reason you'll see both terms being used.

One of the amazing features of this lake and state park is a beautiful three-mile out-and-back canoe trail, where you'll wind through the forest of bald cypress trees.

The trail starts near the spillway. Once you reach Pine Tree Creek, you'll follow the white trail signs and then turn around when you reach the two logs that have fallen down across the creek.

In the big open water area of this 140-acre lake, you could see all sorts of birds like ducks, kingfishers, osprey, and occasionally bald eagles. It's a wonderful spot to spend some time bird watching!

And finally, this little-known lake is also a great spot for fishing, with bass, bream, and catfish often caught here.

In addition to all of the recreational activities suitable at this spot, it's also a place to simply take in the stunning scenery.
