The Rhode Island Hike That’s 100% Worth Braving the Cold
There's a great winter hike in Rhode Island hiding near Coventry, and this 2.7-mile trail is a fantastic excuse to bundle up.
Rhode Island is such a small state that it's hard to believe how many great parks and forests there are hiding within its borders. For adventurous hikers, there's plenty to do without leaving the Ocean State, and that goes double in winter because many of the state's most beautiful hikes look completely different during this time of year. I love a good winter hike, and I would much rather grab my hat and scarf than worry about overheating on a summer day.
If you're looking for a peaceful, relaxing hike with beautiful snow-covered sights, the Paul Cook Memorial Trail is an ideal choice. Located in the George B. Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge not far from Coventry, this 2.7-mile easy hike should be suitable for all skill levels and is a great choice for families. But even if you've taken it before, it's worth doing again in the winter because it's a whole new world out there.
Located in a beautiful and peaceful wildlife refuge, the Paul Cook Memorial Trail should take a little over an hour to explore. With an elevation gain of 354 feet, it's a laid-back hike that should be suitable for anyone with a good pair of hiking boots and a lust for adventure.
The hike shouldn't take you to any challenging terrain, but you'll find plenty of small brooks, cascades, and up-and-down sections. Dogs aren't allowed on the trail as it's a wildlife refuge, and it's rarely crowded in the winter.
Along the way, you'll encounter signs, explaining some of the history of the wildlife refuge, as well as unique buildings and ruins.
The most distinctive feature here is the unique rock formations, some of which make for amazing photo ops. The whole area looks completely different in the winter, almost like an ancient landscape filled with wonders.
