Got a case of cabin fever? It has certainly been a quiet, mellow Rhode Island winter, and there are certainly no signs of spring on the horizon. Banish the seasonal blues by enjoying a nice, relaxing hike by the sea. The Napatree Point Conservation Area has a perfect trail that's great for all skill levels and offers the best views ever.
The Napatree Point Conservation Area, or Napatree as the locals know it, is located in Westerly, near Watch Hill.
This slender, long peninsula is a wildlife preserve and a popular public beach protected by the Watch Hill Conservancy and Fire District.
The main trail at Napatree is a nice, peaceful 3.2 mile loop locals love to walk all year long.
Not only is it considered an easy hike for novices and experienced outdoor enthusiasts alike, but it's packed full of stunning ocean views.
The loop trail takes you all the way around the peninsula, and the path is very well-marked.
Most of the trail is basically on the beach.
Eventually the trail juts out into Fisher Island Sound, where you can see Connecticut right across the water.
You'll also be close to the iconic Watch Hill Lighthouse.
This area is fantastic for bird watching, and you just might spot other Rhode Islanders doing just that.
American Oystercatchers, Osprey and American Kestrel are some of the most commonly spotted birds.
The trail is accessible from early in the morning to late in the evening, and we highly recommend catching a sunset here.
They're truly mesmerizing.
Before you hike this beautiful trail, make sure you check the tides.
This is a very narrow area and you're right on the ocean, so it's good to keep that in mind.
