A 4.4-Mile Rhode Island Trail Ends at a Secluded Swamp
Meander along the Great Swamp Trail, one of the best hikes in Rhode Island, that leads straight to a breathtaking swamp. It's a must-add to your bucket list.
Rhode Island may be tiny, but we have so much to explore that it would take years, perhaps even a lifetime, to see it all. A brisk hike is one of the best ways to get to know Rhode Island and all of the natural beauty it offers. Whether you're an avid hiker or a relative newbie, you'll quickly discover that the Great Swamp Trail, one of the best hikes in Rhode Island, is a relaxing way to spend an hour or two.
Consider the picturesque Great Swamp Trail, which winds through the Great Swamp Management Area in South Kingstown, more of a long, leisurely walk than a traditional hike. Tallying just 4.4 miles, the trail snags an easy rating and usually takes around 90 minutes to complete. Pick up the trailhead near the free parking lot that offers ample parking.
The kid-friendly path can get muddy after rain and snow, so lace up a sturdy pair of hiking shoes you don't mind getting dirty. Much of the easy trail will take you along tree-lined dirt roads, verdant foliage protecting you from the harsh glare of the sun in the summer. However, sunscreen is still a good idea.
If you're visiting during the warmer months, lather on the bug spray. Bring it along, too, because it can get extremely buggy along the path and near the water. However, remember to bring out whatever you take in with you to avoid littering on the trail.
Since the trail is easy, it's popular in all four seasons, so consider planning a visit in each. In the autumn, the path transforms into a colorful masterpiece, promising plenty of photo-worthy moments, especially if you visit during the peak of the fall foliage.
A word of warning: Keep an eye out for the dates for hunting season. During hunting season, visitors must wear bright orange when exploring the management area.
With more than 3,000 acres, the Great Swamp Management Area offers a variety of natural features, including meadows, woodlands, and wetlands. A spring or summer stroll means passing meadows of colorful wildflowers and wild berry bushes.
Don't be surprised if you come across a variety of wildlife, too, including turtles and frogs. You'll likely pass turtles basking in the golden sunlight on sunny days. One of my favorite things when hiking is hearing the pitter-patter of squirrel feet running up a nearby tree or seeing a deer peeking out from behind a cluster of trees.
One of the highlights of the trail is, arguably, the swamp. Take the time to admire the scenery, snap photos, and take a bit of a breather before continuing on your way. The area near the water can get pretty buggy when it's warm.
Plan a winter hike along the Great Swamp Trail, too. If you visit after a fresh snowfall, explore the trail on cross-country skis. Consider bringing hiking poles if you're hiking and it's snowy and/or icy.
If you're up for an even longer adventure, keep hiking past the Great Swamp Trail and onto the Worden Pond Trail. It's also rated easy and runs two miles past the end of the Great Swamp Trail.
