While Rhode Island is known for many wonderful things, we'll be the first to admit it's not a place people come for the hikes. The Ocean State has some beautiful seaside nature walks and even a famous cliff walk, but for challenging adventures, you typically have to leave the state. However, if you're up for a bit of a challenge, the Long Pond Woods Trail is surprisingly breathtaking in more ways than one.
You'll find the Long Pond Woods Trail near Hope Valley, about 36 miles from Providence.
At 4.5 miles in length with a 469-foot elevation gain, it's considered a moderately challenging hike.
This picturesque trail is one of the only hikes in the entire state that offers a challenging terrain.
Needless to say, experienced hikers love it.
The path winds through several nature conservation areas, including the Nature Conservancy and Audubon lands.
The elevation gain is slow and steady, but you'll start to feel it in your legs almost right away.
As you're hiking, keep an eye out for wildlife.
This is a great habitat for mink and for rarely spotted birds like the Barred Owl.
Eventually, you'll reach the peak, where you can gaze out over the pond.
This is a view like no other.
The Long Pond Woods land is part of a large conservation area with trails connecting to Connecticut.
This is truly an underrated and unique part of the state, and it's worth exploring.
Since this is a wildlife habitat, dogs are not allowed on this trail.
The hike is fairly family-friendly, although you may want to keep very young children at home.
