Nighttime promises quiet, usually along with soothing sounds, like the chirp of crickets or the hoot of owls, of nature. Nothing is more relaxing, at least for me, on a clear night than sitting outside and gazing up at the starry sky, maybe even wishing to see a shooting star. But as beautiful as that view is, we can get an even closer, more spectacular view of the nighttime sky, and learn more about the stars above, on select evenings at Ladd Observatory in Providence.
Get an epic view of the nighttime sky at Brown University’s Ladd Observatory. The historic Rhode Island landmark, which opened in 1891, hosts public viewing sessions on Monday evenings from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., a departure from previous years when the observatory was open on Tuesday nights. Public viewing sessions are free.
A tradition since it opened more than 130 years ago, Ladd Observatory’s public viewing sessions offer a unique opportunity to view the nighttime sky through the 15-foot refracting telescope, which features a lens that is a foot in diameter. One of the few remaining of its kind, the telescope is entirely mechanical and promises a one-of-a-kind viewing experience. It is so powerful that it helps bring intricate details into focus. You might be able to see, for example, Saturn’s rings and the craters of the moon. Brown University students are typically on hand to field questions and offer assistance in viewing the nighttime sky.
During the public viewing session, you’ll have the opportunity to see such historic instruments as precision pendulum clocks, chronometers, and transit telescopes.
Ladd Observatory also hosts a variety of other events throughout the year, including workshops and lectures.
Because parking at Ladd Observatory is limited, the observatory advises guests that they can find parking along Doyle Avenue. Free tickets are required. You can find all of the upcoming dates and request tickets online. Keep an eye on your email on the day of your visit. The evening may be canceled due to inclement weather, including a cloudy sky.
