Hike This Stairway To Nowhere In Pennsylvania For A Magical Woodland Adventure

Thousand Steps Trail in Pennsylvania offers a challenging hike with over 1,000 steps and breathtaking views.

Hiking just might be the perfect way to get outdoors and to explore our beautiful state. Fortunately, we have access to countless trails across the state. One, however, just might stand out from the rest for its sheer uniqueness – a trail that includes a staircase of more than 1,000 steps. Although a challenge, this hike in Pennsylvania promises breathtaking views.

Get ready for a challenging workout on the Thousand Steps Trail, which boasts just over 1,000 steps leading to the top of Jacks Mountain in Central Pennsylvania.

Although you’re in for a physical challenge – some compare the hike to a solid hour of working out on a stair machine – you’ll definitely be well-rewarded. The Thousand Steps Trail boasts sensational views during the majority of your hike.

Part of the larger Standing Stone Trail, the Thousand Steps Trail spans nearly 3.5 miles and offers spots where you can sit down and take a breather before continuing your climb.

Before you set off, however, make sure you have plenty of water and snacks to help keep you nourished. If you’re bringing a dog, he must be leashed.

Dating back to the mid to late-1930s, the Thousand Steps provided a route for miners to travel from the bottom of the mountain (home) to their job on the mountain. (Yep, they climbed the stairs daily.)

Markers along the trail – at every 100 stairs – make it easy for you to keep track of how far you’re progressing up the mountain.

Once you arrive at the top, stop to admire the sweeping views, and explore the remnants of an old office building.

Those who have hiked the Thousand Steps warn that the descent might be just as challenging as the climb up, especially since your legs will likely be tired.
