We Love Our National Parks, but This Pennsylvania Park Is Just as Scenic

Promised Land State Park, nestled in the Pocono Mountains, offers over 3,000 acres of scenic forests, lakes, and trails. Whether you're hiking, fishing, or just relaxing by the water, it's the perfect spot to escape and enjoy the great outdoors.

If you're looking for a Pennsylvania getaway with lots of natural beauty but maybe not quite the crowds of some bigger-name destinations across the U.S., Promised Land State Park is worth checking out. National parks and recreation areas like the Delaware Water Gap get a lot of attention, and for good reason! But I’ve always liked places that offer a more laid-back, personal way to enjoy the outdoors, and this state park up in the Pocono Mountains fits the bill. It has over 3,000 acres of forest and water waiting to be explored.

Promised Land sits high up on the Pocono Plateau—I'm talking about 1,800 feet above sea level—with even more protected land around it in the Delaware State Forest. The park's two main lakes, Promised Land Lake and Lower Lake, are just perfect for getting on the water in the summer, whether you like to boat, fish, or swim. Both lakes have sandy beaches, and you can easily rent rowboats, kayaks, or paddleboats right there to enjoy the calm water. Since only electric motors are allowed on the lakes, it stays nice and peaceful, even on busy weekends.

Hiking is a fantastic way to see everything here. The park has more than 50 miles of trails, from easy loops to harder trails that go through thick woods and follow creeks. A favorite for families is the Conservation Island Trail; it's just over a mile long, it's flat, and has great views of the lake and forest. If you're up for something a little more adventurous, the Little Falls Trail goes past small waterfalls along a creek—it's a lovely spot for a quiet walk or a picnic.

If you want to spend the night, the park has plenty of options. You can choose from rustic tent sites, cabins, or RV hookups. Lots of people love coming back here year after year for the camping, that cool mountain air, and how it feels like a real escape from the daily grind.

Promised Land is much more than just a pretty place. This land has a long history: it was first used by the Lenni Lenape people, later logged by settlers, and then reforested as part of Pennsylvania's conservation efforts. You can learn all about the park's past at the Masker Museum, which is open in the summer. It tells the story, including the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps who built many of the park's buildings back in the 1930s.

Whether you're hiking, paddling, or just relaxing by the water, you’ll feel a strong connection to this state park and the care that goes into preserving it. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area may be one of the region’s more recognized names, but Promised Land captures that same feeling of wonder and renewal—with its own distinct sense of place.
