The Spooky Pennsylvania Hike That Will Lead You Somewhere Deserted
Explore the eerie Pike 2 Bike trail in Pennsylvania, featuring abandoned tunnels and rugged terrain.
We can find a little bit of everything - from abandoned ruins to beautiful wildflower fields - on the countless trails that wander through Pennsylvania. Some hikes might even be a little bit, well, eerie. This spooky hike in Pennsylvania will take you to a place that's long been abandoned, although it's slowly becoming popular with hikers and bikers.
Are you brave enough to follow the stretch of abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike that's now known as the Pike 2 Bike?
Really, you have nothing to worry about. It's a little bit quiet, maybe a little too quiet at times, and leads to some really fascinating spots.
Slip on a pair of comfy shoes (you're definitely going to need them) for the 8.2-mile trek that's rated easy. However, you might have to deal with some rugged terrain and potholes along the way.
This is a photo-worthy trail, so don't forget your camera, and bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you moving.
Two of the undeniable highlights of the trail are the stroll through the abandoned tunnels - Sideling Hill Tunnel and Ray's Hill Tunnel.
Your best bet is to bring a flashlight along for your trek through the tunnels. Watch where you step, too. The tunnels are often littered with garbage and glass, and you might feel water dripping down.
If you're bringing kids along, be prepared to see a lot of graffiti. Some of it might contain profanity.
The tunnels are long, and the terrain can be uneven. However, hikers and bikers praise the tunnels for their eerie aura and because they offer a cool reprieve from the hot sun during the summer.
Because you'll be in a pretty remote area, you probably don't want to hike alone. The area really does take on a spooky air.
