We don't always have to crack open a book or spend a day at a nearby museum to get a glimpse into Pennsylvania's rich history. Sometimes the history is right in our backyard. This scenic trail in Pennsylvania, for example, will take you past the three remaining locks - and a tunnel - of a historic canal. Because it earns an easy rating, the picturesque Pennsylvania trail is ideal for hikers of all ages and all skill levels.
You might want to make a day of it when you visit Union Canal Tunnel Park in Lebanon, a 110-park that's home to a 2.5-mile walking path.
The walking path meanders along a variety of terrain, including farmland and pastures, but the highlight is, arguably, the historic Union Canal.
William Penn originally proposed the canal route along the Susquehanna River in 1690. However, work on the historic canal didn't begin until 1825. It would open two years later.
Today, three locks and a tunnel remain. The Union Canal Tunnel, in fact, earns the distinction as the "oldest existing transportation tunnel in the United States."
Wander past the three locks and the historic tunnel for a unique glimpse at the past. However, that's not the only way you can explore this historic canal.
Narrated canal tours are also available on select Sundays seasonally. If you time it right, you can tour the canal and follow the walking path.
You'll have plenty of opportunities to just sit and admire the views, too. The park is dotted with benches and picnic tables.
Union Canal Tunnel Park is open daily, all year round, from dawn until dusk.
