Life in Pennsylvania is pretty good. After all, we never want for something to do. During the bustling weekdays, there are dozens of restaurants, family-friendly activities, museums, and other amusements to keep us entertained. But in slower, more reflective moments, PA has wonderful options as well. Any time we need a quick getaway to recharge, most of us are within easy driving distance of one of the many picturesque lakes in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania lakes offer the opportunity to cool down, to reconnect with nature, and to admire the views. And besides, what could be better than spending a day at one of the best lakes in Pennsylvania?
Stretching 8,000 incredible acres, Raystown Lake is easily one of the best lakes in Pennsylvania. It promises something for everyone — from outdoor enthusiasts to those who prefer to just lounge on the beach.
In the summer months looking out over the lake is like looking at a painting. The lush greens of the trees, the beautiful reflective blues in the water, and the puffy clouds in the sky all come together for an incredibly picturesque view.
Before you decide what to do, stand on the water's edge to admire the simple beauty of what some have called the clearest lake in Pennsylvania.
This is high praise considering there are a total of 2,500 lakes in the great state of Pennsylvania. Out of all of those incredible bodies of water, many people agree that this is one of the best.
Head to nearby Hawn's Overlook, for sweeping views of the Raystown Lake region — and the lake itself.
Maybe you want to capture the view by painting en plein air or by snapping a carefully planned photograph. Or maybe you'd like to just sit in the stillness of nature and take in the world around you. Either way, you'll enjoy this setting.
The lake offers an idyllic opportunity for staying cool during the summer. Throw your beach towel on the sand, and take a dip in the clear water.
Or, explore the water aboard a kayak, a canoe, or your own boat.
Some people can't sit still at the beach. If that's you, options abound to keep you entertained. Whether you're an experienced water sportsman or you're looking to try something new, there are many ways to view the lake from the water itself.
Then, again, you might want to sit back, relax, and watch the scenery go by as the captain maneuvers the Proud Mary Showboat, which is one of the many amenities you'll find at Lake Raystown Resort, a waterfront campground in Pennsylvania.
If you're concerned about piloting your own boat, this would be a great option. You can still enjoy the side of the scenery from the water but without having to worry about the workout of paddling a kayak or the tricky work of steering a rowboat.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife, too, like the tortoise pictured below.
The lake is home to a flourishing ecosystem and you may be surprised by all the wildlife you can spot even in one relaxing day visiting the beach.
Raystown Lake is located at 6993 Seven Points Rd., Suite 2, Hesston, PA 16647.
You'll know you're in the right place when you see stunning landscapes and breathtaking sunsets like this one.

If you love visiting Pennsylvania lakes, you’ll want to check out Curwensville Lake. Not only is it one of the best lakes in Pennsylvania, but it’s one of the bluest lakes in the state, too. We know, we know, it feels like every lake in the state has something to brag about! And when it comes to notable Pennsylvania Lakes, Lake Wallenpaupack is another that fits the bill. It is one of the largest lakes contained entirely within the state.
