Before Word Gets Out, Visit Pennsylvania’s Newest Hiking Trail

We often hear about the latest restaurant and business openings, but it's not quite as common to learn about new hiking trails. Did you know, for example, that one of the newest hiking trails in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania promises plenty of peace and quiet and the opportunity to view local wildlife? Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a newbie, consider adding this pretty path to your outdoor bucket list.

When the lone hiking trail at the 200-acre Ephraim Malickson Wildlife Sanctuary opened in the spring of 2023, it helped fulfill the dream of the late Birdsboro resident.

Before he passed away in 2010, Malickson made it known he wanted the land he owned to remain undeveloped and to become a sanctuary for nature and local wildlife.

Although it tends to be quiet, the wildlife sanctuary has ample parking if you visit on a busy day.

You'll likely also hear the sanctuary referred to as "Tekene 2," the name Malickson gave the land. An indigenous Lenape word, tekene means "uninhabited."

An educational placard provides more information on both Malickson and the sanctuary.

Meandering 1.5 miles through the sanctuary, the Orange, Red, Yellow, and Blue Trail earns an easy rating and tends to be quite quiet most of the time.

If you're in the mood for some quiet time in nature, you've come to the right place. You'll likely only run into local wildlife, including birds and deer, on your journey.

Stroll through the forested area, where you'll pass wildflowers in the warmer months. Those warmer months also bring an abundance of bugs, so plan accordingly.

Much of the path is well-shaded too, although wearing and bringing sunscreen is always a good idea.
