Swim at The Iconic Deschutes Swimming Hole in Oregon for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun
This gorgeous destination near Bend is popular with swimmers, fishermen, and cliff-jumpers.
Bend isn’t exactly lacking in options for fun outdoor activities. In fact, this city in central Oregon has become famous for its proximity to different landscapes that allow anybody and everybody to fulfill their inner outdoors-person. However, it is notable that most of these activities do require some amount of constant movement (hiking, tubing, rafting, biking, winter sports, etc). But what about ways to have fun outdoors while being able to relax in one spot? This is where the Steelhead Falls Swimming Hole comes in.
Located about 32 miles north of Bend on the Deschutes River, this waterfall and swimming hole are part of the National Conservation Lands. This means that they are both remote and popular — an unusual mix, but one that has guaranteed a well-maintained parking lot and bathrooms run by the Bureau of Land Management.
A hot spot for swimming and cliff jumping, the water from Steelhead Falls drops 20 feet and collects in a wide basin surrounded by rocks and a few trees dotting around the edges. The smaller rocks near the sides of the cliffs are, of course, safer for jumping, but there are always a few brave souls who attempt to jump from the top of the waterfall (do so at your own risk).
But, for those who don’t actually want to get in the water, there’s always fishing! For this, there are signs that will direct you to the best spots, where you’ll find rainbow and brown trout, as well as hatchery steelhead. As always, tagged fish have certain rules around whether or not you can keep them.
It is important to note that although the area is popular most of the year, it is not always advisable to enter the swimming hole due to the water’s extremely cold temperatures. The river, waterfall, and swimming hole are always cold because it runs on snowmelt. This means that the water temperature will be warmest during the late summer months, but it can still be dangerous to access even during warm days because of the vast difference between the water and air temperatures, which can cause the body to go into shock if one is not careful.
Beyond being popular for the thrill-seekers, swimmers, and fishermen, the area is also popular with families with young children and dogs, due to the moderately short hike required to get there. However, it is important to note that whereas the hike is short, it can also be steep and is not ADA-accessible. Also, rattlesnakes are common in this area and must always be at the forefront of any hiker’s mind when making their way to the falls, especially with children and/or a dog.
Of course, you don’t need to engage in any outdoor activities at Steelhead Falls. You can simply sit and appreciate the view of cascading water and smiling faces enjoying the area. This area is meant to be relished by all, no matter how you use it. Do you have another favorite Oregon swimming hole that you think people might enjoy?
