This picturesque 101-acre lake, surrounded by the stunning landscape of McAlester, offers a tranquil escape and a glimpse into Oklahoma's history.
Constructed in 1902, Talawanda Lake Number 1 was initially built to serve as a water source for nearby counties. At that time, Oklahoma had limited natural lakes, primarily oxbow lakes formed by the state's numerous rivers
With a scarcity of sizable water bodies, the early 20th century saw a movement to create artificial lakes by damming rivers, providing drinking water for communities.
While Talawanda Lake Number 1 was originally intended for municipal water use, it has since transformed into a haven for anglers. The lake boasts impressive water clarity, particularly when compared to its nearby sibling, Talawanda Lake Number 2.
The lake features a boat ramp, picnic area, and playground, providing amenities for a complete outdoor experience. While swimming and recreational water sports are not common activities, the lake's serene environment makes it an ideal spot for casting a line and enjoying the tranquility of nature.
