As the new year approaches, we tend to want to make goals and resolutions. But let’s be honest, if you’re anything like me, by February, most of those milestones will be out the window. Of course, we don’t have to create the same tiring routine next year. How about we follow through and commit to something that will jump-start our year in the best way possible? If you agree, then let’s head to Quartz Mountain State Park in Lone Wolf Oklahoma. Here you can venture on a path of new beginnings on the New Horizon Trail to reflect on life ahead. This little-known hiking trail in Oklahoma is the best way to kick off the coming year.
The name alone is reason enough to venture on this short and sweet hike in Southwestern Oklahoma. The New Horizon Trail is only 0.5 miles long, but it’s oh-so rewarding. The trail is open year-round, but if you’re seeking solitude, it’s best to visit during this time of year. Plus, there are little to no shaded areas on this trail, so the warmer months will be a bit brutal.
What you’ll love the most about this trail is the breathtaking vistas. Seeing Lake Altus-Lugert from the top of the mountain is truly a sight to behold. The panoramic views of the valley below also include the Lugert Dam, the rolling hills of the Wichita Mountains, the campground as well as the lodge inside the park. You’ll have plenty to look at while at the top of the mountain.
At less than a mile long, this trail might be short but it’s not easy to navigate. If you ask me, that’s part of this new adventure that we’re on. After all, life is about overcoming obstacles and challenges in our way. Also, for some additional adventure, try taking a path up the side of the mountain that is not on the trail. Don’t worry, you won’t get lost, and as in life, you’ll eventually find your destination.
The trail is rugged, steep, very rocky, and you’ll be scrambling over large boulders to get to the end. Have no fear though because the effort is certainly worth the reward. Just be prepared by wearing sturdy hiking boots and watching your step to prevent slipping on the rocks. As you trek, you’ll come across a historical site, there will be wildflowers including cacti, and of course, local wildlife.
If you want to share your new adventure with the dog and kids, you’ll be glad to know that this trail is both kid and dog-friendly. The pup must stay on its leash and the little ones will have a blast climbing over the boulders.
While this hike might be fun for the family, trust me, there is no pressure to bring them along. Plus, if you need some time to reflect, there will be lots of spots for you to sit in peace. Plan your trip during sunrise or at sunset because those are the best times of the day to gather your thoughts and think about adulting. So, if you want to start off the year on a new adventure, this little-known hiking trail in Oklahoma belongs on your bucket list.
Are you ready for new beginnings in the year ahead? If so, then kick off your year with a hike on the New Horizon Trail inside Quartz Mountain State Park. It’s a great destination for reflecting on the challenges and rewards of life.
