The Fall Foliage Along This Ohio Trail Is Nothing Short Of Spectacular, Especially At The Scenic Overlook

Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve offers a spectacular fall foliage hike in Ohio's Hocking Hills.

There's nothing like fall in Ohio, and our favorite way to revel in the seasonal splendor of the Buckeye State is out on the trails. While many know of the amazing hikes in Hocking Hills, Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve is a less-traveled part of the region that's especially lovely in the autumn. In fact, the fall foliage along the Conkles Hollow Gorge Trail is nothing short of spectacular during the peak of autumn in Ohio, making this 1.2-mile hike a must for all Buckeye State leaf peepers!

Hocking Hills is one of the most resplendent regions of the Buckeye State, offering some of the most sublime scenery and bucket-list-worthy outdoor recreation. It's objectively considered one of the best places for hiking in Ohio, and for good reason.

The hikes within this 2,356-acre Ohio State Park feature incredible natural wonders like waterfalls, caves, cliffs, and rock formations. Yet there are a few treks -- we're looking at you, Old Man's Cave and Ash Cave! -- that tend to steal the spotlight, and if you limit yourself to these trails, you could be really missing out...

...especially in the fall. This is the Rim Trail at Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve, a scenic narrow gorge located in Hocking Hills State Park.

This 1.2-mile, out-and-back trail is considered easy, and it leads to an overlook that boasts some of the best views in the Buckeye State, especially in the height of fall foliage!

The Rim Trail winds past caves and waterfalls (a hallmark of Hocking Hills State Park!), traversing deep into the forests of Eastern Ohio.

At times, the foliage will be so thick, it will appear dark, save for the dappling sunlight that seems to dance upon the fall foliage.

The trail leading up the ravine is surrounded by vertical cliffs rising over 200 feet above the mouth of the gorge. As the trail continues, the gorge narrows further to only a distance of 300 feet from cliff to cliff. And then, well, this happens.

Incredible, right?

These cliffs are the highest in the area and provide some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. When the ravines and valleys are awash in fall color, there truly is no place more beautiful in Ohio.

Just watch your step -- the outcroppings are definitely a bit steep. Exercise caution and find a safe spot to sit; allow yourself to be swept up in this beautiful scenery and season.
