Swim at This Iconic Natural Gem Swimming Hole in Ohio for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun
This summer, make a big splash and create new fun memories at this pretty swimming spot inside Geneva State Park.
What is your perfect summer day in Ohio? Is it sliding down Point Plummet at Cedar Point Shores or spending a lazy day floating on the scenic river in Hocking Hills?
When I think of my favorite summertime activity, it includes a trip to a sandy beach and soaking up the sun along beautiful shorelines. To take my day to the next level, I would have a picnic, enjoy a stroll in nature while listening to the soothing melodies of the songbirds, and then sit and watch the pretty sunset. So, for me, nothing beats a day at Geneva State Park in northeastern Ohio. Here, you’ll find hiking trails, picnic tables, and of course, the gorgeous Breakwater Beach on Lake Erie. Since the lake is the most iconic swimming "hole" in Ohio, the park is the ultimate destination for summertime memories.
There are plenty of places for outdoor fun in Ohio, but get ready to fall in love with your new favorite spot - Geneva State Park. This natural oasis, located just 50 miles northeast of Cleveland, not only has a sandy beach, but it also features hiking trails, picnic spots, a lighthouse, a marina, and one of the best camping destinations in the state. It’s a summertime playground for folks like me who enjoy the best of both worlds: nature and the sandy shores of Lake Erie.
The swimming spot here (Breakwater Beach) stretches for 600 feet and is surrounded by pretty little wildflowers and serene woodlands. Its clear blue waters rival some of the best beaches in the islands. Locals love this state park and flock to it to take advantage of the camping and the scenic shores. Although it might get crowded, there is plenty of room to splash and play. If you prefer to skip the crowds, you’ll be happier at the more secluded shorelines at the park. They’re great for sunbathing and quiet lakeside picnics. So, pack a cooler with snacks, grab your favorite book, and spend the day basking in the beauty of this iconic oasis.
A day at this 700-acre state park is more than just making a splash at the beach. It includes hiking through the four-mile paved Geneva Orange Trail, taking in the views of the lake, and meandering through gorgeous woodlands. Since the trail is paved, it’s perfect for moms with strollers, and it’s wheelchair-friendly, too. Your canine pal can spend the day or weekend here exploring the trails, and there is even a designated swim beach for your furry bestie. Just make sure to keep them on their leash as you trek.
The park is incredible, no matter the time of year, but it comes alive during warmer months. Aside from hiking and beach days, boaters and anglers love fishing here. You can also rent a kayak or pedal boat for extra fun. And if you don’t want to get into the water, check out the Geneva-on-the-Lake Lighthouse, built in 2019. It’s not open to the public, but you can take some cool pics of it. Or better yet, book a zip line with Lake Erie Canopy Tours and soar through the woodlands while witnessing Lake Erie from above. If you want to extend your stay (I suggest you do), reserve a lakefront campsite for you and your family.
Regardless of how you choose to explore this state park, it’s guaranteed that your summer days will be memorable. Especially when you make a splash at Breakwater Beach on Lake Erie, the most iconic swimming hole in Ohio.
