Stops on the Flower Road Trip

Mt. Airy Arboretum - Cincinnati

Starting in Cincinnati and working our way clockwise around the state, Mt. Airy Arboretum is a glorious treasure that often falls under the radar, even to locals. I love this arboretum for its rolling hills and simplicity; while the trees are the focal point, in the spring, the grounds of Mt. Airy Arboretum are blanketed in so many white wildflowers that they almost look like snow. The trees also blossom with vibrant pink flowers, a sure sign of spring. Visit the City of Cincinnati website for hours and additional information before your visit to Mt. Airy Arboretum, arguably one of the best arboretums in Ohio.

Cox Arboretum MetroPark - Dayton

While Dayton is best known for aviation, this mid-sized city is also home to some of the best metroparks in Ohio. Cox Arboretum is certainly one of them; in the spring, you'll find rows and rows of impeccably pruned flora that's a technical dream-come-true. Visit the MetroParks website for park hours.

Possum Creek MetroPark - Dayton

Another Dayton treasure, Possum Creek MetroPark, is a nature lover's happy place! Full of pollinator-friendly plants (and butterflies!) among the tallgrass prairie, this is a wonderful *and* family friendly place to enjoy spring flowers in Ohio.

Detour: Lima Japanese Gardens

Tucked away in little Lima, Ohio, you'll find a beautiful Japanese Garden c/o the Lima Sister Cities. (Lima, is sister cities with Harima-cho, Japan.) This glorious garden is located in Lima on the south side of the Ottawa River Corridor bike path between Elizabeth and West Streets, a waterfront spot perfect for cherry blossoms to thrive. Visit the City of Lima website for more.

Toledo Botanical Garden - Toledo

One of our favorite hidden-gem botanical gardens in Ohio, the Toledo Botanical Garden spans 60 acres and is flush with native flora and fauna. Despite its small size, you'll find yourself immersed in gardens and plant collections galore, and its urban garden is an amazing asset to the Greater Toledo community. Head to the Toledo MetroParks website to see what's currently in bloom.

Brookside Reservation - Cleveland

Of all the beautiful Cleveland Metroparks, Brookside Reservation might be our favorite to visit in the spring. The 160-acre park boasts what's perhaps the best cherry blossom grove in Ohio, and each spring, folks come from far and wide to experience these beauteous blooms in person. Visit the Cleveland Metroparks website for park hours and a trail map.

The Dawes Arboretum - Newark

Just outside of Ohio's capital city, The Dawes Arboretum is a real-life urban oasis. Located in Newark, The Dawes Arboretum features some of the most stunning botanical gardens in Ohio, plus nature trails and whimsical sculptures, a trio of features that truly come vibrantly alive in the springtime.

Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve - Rockbridge

The Hocking Hills region is known for caves and waterfalls, but did you know wildflowers also thrive here? Old Man's Cave is a popular spot for wildflowers, but I prefer Conkles Hollow, which is generally less crowded and home to some of Ohio's most marvelous native species. Visit the Ohio DNR website for Conkles Hollow hiking information if you want to experience a few wildflower hikes in Ohio this spring.

Our flower road trip might just be the perfect spring travel in Ohio adventure for anyone. From solo travelers or couples to families for something to do during a spring break vacation, there's something for everyone along this route.. If you're looking for more ways to embrace the season, consider a mini getaway at one of these Ohio Airbnbs.
