Explore the Ruins of an Abandoned Train Tunnel on This Creepy Ohio Hike

Ohio's hiking trails are beautiful. Showcasing the state's natural beauty and diverse landscapes, these special routes always renew our appreciation for the Buckeye State. Yet there are a handful of trails that are a bit more intriguing, either for their history or their alleged hauntings. Today's feature trail is a creepy one because it will take you right through an abandoned railroad tunnel. The verdict is still out on whether this trail is haunted or not, but trust us when we say it will give you some pause. Here's more on the creepiest hike in Ohio: King's Hollow Tunnel.

Ohio has its fair share of abandoned tunnels. You've likely heard of one of the more famous of them, the iconic Moonville Tunnel. Not far from this iconic Ohio landmark awaits yet another abandoned train tunnel: the King’s Hollow Tunnel near Mineral. In fact, it sits along the same former railroad line as the Moonville Tunnel on the Moonville Rail Trail in Zaleski State Forest.

This particular landmark is a bit off the beaten path and not as well marked. It is, however, equally as intriguing. The tunnel was built in 1855, when it was originally used by the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad. Over the course of its lifespan, it also served the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and CSC Railroad.

The tunnel was closed in the 1980s and has remained abandoned ever since. Yet it's by no means forgotten; many a hiker and explorer have braved to hike to this hidden gem of a destination. One factor that sets this abandoned tunnel apart is that it's completely timber-lined, unlike the Moonville Tunnel, a few miles to the southwest, which was constructed of brick. This is quite a feat considering the fact that it's 352 feet long.

The easiest way to access this landmark is by parking at the park near the intersection of King Hollow Trail and Rockcamp Road. The Moonville Rail Trail crosses Rockcamp Road just south of the intersection. Follow the trail east for about half a mile to reach King's Hollow Tunnel. You could also follow the trail from Moonville Tunnel for 2.6 miles to King's Hollow Tunnel and enjoy a two-tunnel hike.
