The year was 1856.

The small town of Moonville was established in Brown Township to accommodate the expanding Marietta and Cincinnati railroad. Things were looking up for a while, and folks began filing in, gradually.

At its most prosperous, the town was home to nearly 100 coal-mining families, and the Moonville Tunnel was the only way in and out of town.

It's an impressive and almost imposing structure, offering up plenty of intimidation for those who are wary of dark places and large openings.

There was one fatal flaw with the tunnel's construction, however.

The space was too narrow for pedestrians to walk through the tunnel while a train was passing. Unfortunately, this resulted in many deaths, ensuring the people of Moonville learned some dark lessons in very hard ways.

By 1947, the town of Moonville was completely abandoned.

Today, all that remains are the tunnel, a few bridge foundations, and a forgotten cemetery. It is unknown just how many souls lost their lives in the tunnel, but they're said to linger.

Portions of the old railroad line have been converted into hiking and biking routes, so visitors can explore this former railroad and see for themselves.

The area absolutely attracts those interested in paranormal activity. The Moonville Tunnel in Ohio is considered one of the most haunted destinations in the state, and it's not surprising - many people met grisly ends here.

Many have reported seeing the ghosts of former railroad workers killed by train accidents still waving their lights in the tunnel.
