Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in Ohio That’s Perfect for Summer

Experience the best of both worlds this summer in Ohio. Take a sandy hike followed by a refreshing dip at Headlands Beach State Park.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, Headlands Beach State Park is the largest natural sand beach in the state of Ohio. It's so breathtakingly beautiful, in fact, that you could be forgiven for mistaking it for the New England coast. Plus, getting there is easy: You'll find the state park just 40 minutes from Downtown Cleveland. The main draw to the park is the expansive 35-acre beach that's perfect for sunbathing, strolling, or swimming. But that's just the start of what makes this park such a fun day trip destination—hikers will enjoy exploring a network of beautifully maintained trails and sandy pathways. Our recommendation? Take a hike and then cool off at the swimming beach. It's the perfect summer day itinerary.

Headlands Beach State Park is nothing short of heavenly for anyone craving time near the ocean. Sure, it may technically be a lakeshore, but the expansive sandy beach paired with the vastness of Lake Erie creates the perfect coastal environment. The beach lends itself beautifully to leisurely strolls, picnicking, lounging in the sunshine, and even fishing (with a proper Ohio fishing license, of course).

The state park also borders Headlands Dune State Nature Preserve, where a bounty of beautiful hiking trails can be enjoyed. One of our favorites is the Headlands Beach Trail, an easy 1-mile trek that's a breeze to navigate and offers beautiful views of the water. Though the trail is short, having proper footwear is vital, especially in the summer when the sand can get quite hot.

The trail takes just 20 minutes to complete, but this isn't one to rush; take time to soak in the views from the trail's observation deck and enjoy taking it slow along the sandy pathway. After you've finished the trail, you'll find yourself near the Mentor Headlands Public Beach, where you can set up your towel and enjoy a blissful beach day. When you're ready for another trek, be sure to check out Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Light. It's located at the eastern edge of the park. The light was built in 1925, replacing the older light on Fairport Harbor.

A few things to note about the beach: There are no lifeguards on duty, so you'll be swimming at your own risk. Life vests are available for loan near the entrance station. There are public bathrooms available between the parking area and the beach. Camping isn't available at the park, but if you're looking for a nearby place to stay, this adorable bright yellow Airbnb cottage offers direct access to Lake Erie. It's one of the most well-loved rentals in the area!
