Looking for a Hike That Has It All? This Western North Carolina Loop Has 360-Degree Views
For a hike that checks every box, including waterfalls and grand views, head to Grassy Knob.
Nestled atop Nantahala National Forest near Cashiers, North Carolina, the Grassy Knob Loop is the kind of hike that leaves you breathless (in more ways than one). This is one of those special outdoor experiences that features almost everything hikers trek to see: lush forests, sweeping summit panoramas, and the sound of a rushing waterfall ahead. Here’s why every hiker passing through Western Carolina should lace up their boots and plan to go on this uphill adventure.
Trail Logistics and Landmarks
The loop stretches approximately 5.4 miles and gains around 1,108 feet of elevation. Despite the stages of uphill work and easier stretches, the hike is considered moderate due to its underfoot conditions. It offers a balanced mix of sturdy stairs and clearly marked paths, though sometimes covered by fallen trees or slippery, wet leaves.
In all, the five-mile trail takes around two to three hours to complete and connects the Foothills Trail to the Round Mountain Gap Trail to close the loop. Once you summit Grassy Knob, you'll find one of the best views along the hike. In fact, it was once used to spot planes in 1942. Today, the lookout is best for drinking in the views of the lush valley and ridgelines below. On a clear day, you might even be able to spot Lake Jocassee in South Carolina. Whitewater River flows along the hike back to the trailhead, with its cascading falls in the distance.
For those with a little extra energy to burn, venture down the Whitewater River spur trail that juts off from the loop. Here, you'll be rewarded with dramatic sheer rock walls that climb some 50 to 70 feet high overhead. This short extension to the trail also leads hikers closer to the waterfall for a refreshing place to take a break before completing the loop.
When to Go and What to Expect
No matter the season, Grassy Knob offers a stunning landscape to enjoy. Whether the trees are lush and green in the spring and summer months, or golden-colored in the fall, this is truly a four-season trail. And if you're lucky, you can experience the waterfall with icicles in the winter.
Parking is usually readily available with a small gravel lot at the trailhead. Though the trail isn't a technical hike, it's always a good idea to wear sturdy hiking boots in western Carolina, where conditions can be slick thanks to frequent rain showers.
Whether you're an avid hiker or simply want to immerse yourself in the beauty of North Carolina, the Grassy Knob Loop is one that scratches every itch. From working hard on inclines and stairs to the natural landscapes along the way, this is a rare hike that feels both intimate with its winding trails and expansive for its great vistas.
So, carve out time in your day to explore the best of Grassy Knob along this loop hike. Looking out over the rolling hills and onto the sun shining onto the stunning falls, it's easy to see why Nantahala is known as the "Land of the Noonday Sun."
