There is nothing like spending time in the great outdoors. Whether on a hike, while chasing waterfalls, in the middle of a lake, or during a heart-racing whitewater rafting adventure, the fresh air and the beautiful scenery can rejuvenate you. Franklin, North Carolina, is one region that is surrounded not only by jaw-dropping scenery but outdoor adventures as well. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or you just need a little fresh air, Franklin is the perfect place to go.

Franklin is located in southwestern North Carolina and sits at the foot of the Blue Ridge and the Great Smoky Mountains. It is certainly a small town with approximately 4,000 residents calling it home.

While there are restaurants, stores, and museums for you to visit while in this delightful town, many of the region’s hidden gems are found outside.

To see some of Mother Nature’s best creations, take the journey to Wayah Bald Lookout Tower and Observation Area.

Here, you will not only capture gorgeous views of Franklin, but you can see as far as the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Get up early and catch a sunrise at this tower — obviously, there is no better way to start your day.

For the perfect outdoor adventure — and to surround yourself with unforgettable views — hike the Appalachian Trail to the Wesser Bald Fire Tower.

This out-and-back trail is only 2.8-miles but is rated moderate due to a few challenging areas along the way. However, every step is gorgeous and at the end of this scenic hike, you will enjoy 360-degree views at the top of the tower.

Another must-do hiking trail near Franklin is the Pickens Nose Trail. This hiking trail is in the Nantahala National Forest and is only 0.75-miles each way.

This hike is moderate but every step is absolutely beautiful. You’ll hike to gorgeous overlooks, which on a clear day, will let you see for miles. Just be careful near these overlooks as there are some steep and sharp drops that can be quite dangerous.

Of course, there’s nothing like chasing waterfalls and near Franklin, you will find some of the best. Dry Falls is one popular waterfall on U.S. Highway 64. This 75-foot tall waterfall flows over a gorgeous cliff, providing picturesque views from the front of the waterfall and the ability to walk behind the falls and stay dry.

Bridal Veil Falls is a 120-foot waterfall that is also located right along U.S. Highway 64. To view the falls from all angles, take the paved path that circles the flowing water.

One true treasure that offers both beauty and adventure near Franklin is Nantahala Lake.

While Nantahala Lake features awe-inspiring landscapes and more than 29 miles of shoreline, it is a terrific place for boating, swimming, and fishing. In fact, this lake is the only place to find freshwater Kokanee salmon in the southeast.

Along the Nantahala River, you can always throw in a line. This area is also known for its world-class trout fishing.

And if you are looking for a heart-racing adventure, hop in a raft! For eight miles of the Nantahala River, you can experience some of the country’s most incredible and popular whitewater venues.

This stretch of water is a popular place for rafts and kayaks. In fact, these waters are frequently used to train Olympic kayakers, and it has been the location of kayaking championships. You can find multiple companies in this area that offer both guided and unguided whitewater trips.

There's no doubt the Franklin and Nantahala, North Carolina area is an outdoor lover's paradise. From some of the most awe-inspiring hikes, enchanting waterfalls, and even a little heart-racing adventure, this is one region in the Tar Heel State that will leave you completely mesmerized.
