There Are More Waterfalls Than There Are Miles Along This Beautiful Hiking Trail In North Carolina

The Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls Trail in North Carolina offers a 3.9-mile hike featuring multiple stunning waterfalls and scenic views.

In North Carolina, the hiking trails are rich in forested shade, challenging mountain ranges, vast summit views, and unique bridges. But not many have more wonders than miles. The Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls Trail, in Sapphire, has more waterfalls than miles. This 3.9-mile hike along the Horsepasture River features magical views of four large waterfalls, by far the most amazing waterfalls you will ever see. Let's discover why this beautiful hike in Gorges State Park and Pisgah National Forest is worth the trip.

The hike begins in Gorges State Park at the Grassy Ridge Parking area, which is approximately a 2-mile drive from the park entrance.

As you can see, the trail is well-maintained and the falls are epic. It is recommended to use walking sticks to help you through some of the steeper areas and stairs you will encounter.

Follow the orange circles until you reach Pisgah National Forest, and it's about 1.5 miles to the 150-foot breathtaking Rainbow Falls.

This downhill portion has a creek crossing that might be wet and muddy, so dress appropriately.

And just a quarter-mile upstream gives you this interesting cascade Turtleback Falls, aka Umbrella Falls, that actually sits in Pisgah National Forest.

The narrow, and slick trail guides you by the cascades and a few steep sections with stairs.

About a half-mile detour downstream will trek by the spirited, multi-tiered 50-foot Stairway Waterfall sliding over the carved-out boulders.

And the picturesque Drift Falls is another quarter-mile away.

Along the way be mindful of the multitude of lovely spots for taking photos.

And don't forget to look down to find some of the most surprising views.

Visit Gorges State Park's website to find more details about parking and the trails. And while you're there, discover why this park will make you feel like you’ve discovered North Carolina’s best-kept secret.
