If you’re looking for a small town in North Carolina where everyone knows your name, look no further. Despite having a population of just 6,000 year-round, that number increases drastically come summer as tourists flock to the area for hiking and scenic drives. Likewise, the area also sees a bump in visitors during the winter due to the nearby Appalachian Ski Mountain and Beech Mountain Resort. In fact, Blowing Rock is a wonderful base for exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains. The nearby Grandfather Mountain is a crowd favorite for hiking and crossing the Mile High Bridge, the largest swinging bridge in America.
Blowing Rock’s evidence as a true-blue mountain town only increases when dining at The Speckled Trout. Visitors can munch on Appalachian favorites like Carolina mountain trout, pimento cheese, trout nachos, smoked gouda grits, and collard greens. It also doubles as a bottle shop with dozens of craft beer options that are brewed in North Carolina.

Situated at 3,600 feet of elevation, Blowing Rock has mild temperatures throughout the year. Still, spring and fall are the best times to visit Blowing Rock with blooming wildflowers and stunning fall foliage. Speaking of which, you can see these natural features on nearby hiking trails. Chase waterfalls on the Glen Burney Trail, a fairly strenuous 3.2-mile out-and-back hike that highlights three different cascades in the area. Rough Ridge Outlook is another wonderful option near Grandfather Mountain and the Linn Cove Viaduct that is 1.2 miles in length and offers jaw-dropping panoramic scenery.

Blowing Rock also prides itself on its rich arts community, celebrated at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum, better known as BRAHM. Admission is completely free with 10 galleries to explore. The Blowing Rock Art and Sculpture Trail is another great way to see local works, connecting numerous outdoor installations that are scattered throughout town. Of course, you can always plan to visit during Blowing Rock Art in the Park, a series that takes place from May to October with over 100 artists. In fact, there are multiple fun festivals to take part in throughout the year, including the Blowing Rock Trout Derby, Symphony by the Lake, and the annual WinterFest, which features a Polar Bear Plunge and ice sculpture competitions.
