This Hiking Trail Is the Best Way to Experience a Full Moon Rising in North Carolina

This breathtaking loop trail has 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. If you can stay for a few minutes after sunset, you'll be treated to a magical moonrise.

When was the last time you made a special effort to go and marvel at the moon? I have to admit that it's rare that I get the chance to stargaze—or in this case, moongaze—but there's a growing nighttime trend that I'm hoping to try soon: a full moon hike. Some local parks offer ranger-led nighttime hikes under a full moon, but you can also embark on your own evening hike if you feel so inspired. One place that's perfect for viewing a full moon in North Carolina is the Max Patch Loop near Hot Springs.

First, some notes about safety and timing. If you're planning to hike at dusk, please consider bringing a hiking buddy or at least alerting someone of your whereabouts. You'll also want to bring water, a flashlight, and sturdy hiking shoes. The Max Patch Loop is short and easy, but hiking during the evening poses its own set of challenges. It's also important to note that Max Patch Loop closes exactly one hour after sunset, so you shouldn't plan on being there for much longer. Camping is not currently permitted.

Now, some notes on the trail. By day, Max Patch Loop is a breathtaking 1.5-mile hike within the beautiful Pisgah National Forest. But unlike many Western North Carolina trails that take you deep within the woods, winding through old-growth trees, this trail is out in the open. The terrain is relatively flat—just 300 feet of elevation gain total—and along the summit of treeless rolling hills. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow.

Because it's such an approachable, wide-open trail, this is a popular one for sunset hikers. But if you dare stay a bit longer, you'll also enjoy a spectacular moonrise from this trail. The fading sunset colors paired with the rising full moon are a magical experience you won't soon forget! Of course, you don't need to be there for the moonrise to appreciate this stunning scene. By all accounts, simply watching the sunset from this trail is bucket-list-worthy.

Another thing to note: The drive to get to the trailhead is approximately 10 miles on a gravel road. Four-wheel drive is recommended if possible. For up-to-date trail information, maps, and hiker reviews, be sure to check out the official AllTrails listing.
