North Carolina’s Dark Skies Explode With Beauty at This Remote Seashore
The Cape Lookout National Seashore is a primitive adventure with wild horses, beautiful untouched beaches, and some of the best stargazing in North Carolina.
Few things are as humbling as spending the dark night hours looking up at the stars. Lost in the vastness of space, it makes me feel like all of life’s stressors become somehow smaller. The night sky is immensely beautiful, and one of the best places for stargazing in North Carolina can be found at the Cape Lookout National Seashore. This primitive place is filled with adventure, from wild horses to camping right on the sand. There is nothing like “roughing it” in paradise.
Looking at the celestial show at Cape Lookout isn’t as simple as walking out your front door, but it takes some planning. If you are up for a unique adventure unlike anywhere else, then this is one of those places you will want to put on your bucket list. The effort it takes to get out to this remote island will all be worth it when you look up at this lighthouse along the banks of the Atlantic and see endless stars glistening in the night sky.
The only way to get to this stretch of land is by boat, so you can take either your own vessel or the ferry. Once you are on the island, there are little to no facilities, and in the winter, you won’t find many people either. This is truly a remote location where you pack in and out everything you will need. Although this is a great spot to lie on the soft sand and get kissed by the sun, this trip is more about the starry night. Although it would be worth noting, this is an excellent place when it's warm, and you can even bring your tent to camp on the beach!
Before you settle in to watch the starry night sky, explore the island and keep an eye out for the wild horses that call the island home. I always love it when we get to spot wildlife, but a horse on the beach is somehow even more special.
After exploring the area for a bit, just wait to see the spectacular sunset. The sky bursts with colors as the sun illuminates the clouds with warm and waning hues as the day comes to a close. The light of the day might be fading, but this is only the beginning of your adventure.
The Cape Lookout National Seashore is a designated dark sky park and is known for having phenomenal views. Overlook the Milky Way as the sound of the waves gently crashes along the beach. Sit back and relax on the soft sand and see the heavens open up with millions of sparkling stars. There is nothing else quite like this in North Carolina.
When it comes to stargazing in North Carolina, the Cape Lookout National Seashore holds within this remote island an invitation to an incredible adventure. However, there are a few current closures and alerts to be aware of. The Portsmouth Village Visitor Center is closed for repairs. Worry not, as Cape Lookout has two other visitor centers open. Long Point Cabin Camp is still recovering from the damage from Hurricane Dorian, but Great Island Cabin Camp remains open, and a third cabin camp is being constructed. And while you'll still be able to see the lighthouse, getting up close and personal with the Cape Lookout Lighthouse is a no-go, as the stairs to the structure are pending reconstruction.
