Anyone who has lived in New York State for more than a second knows to expect snow. Oftentimes, a lot of snow. So, why not have a little fun with it? Minnewaska State Park Preserve in the Catskills is the perfect place to enjoy all the natural sights of Winter and the powder that comes along with it—all with some snowshoes strapped on. It might just make for some of the best snowshoeing in New York State. To learn more, keep reading below.
On Saturday, January 13 and then Saturday, January 27, Park Educator Nick Martin will be leading a two-mile snowshoe hike at the park. The hike will hit two overlooks in the Peter’s Kill Area, both of which offer amazing views.
Though this hike is somewhat short, there are a couple of moderate hill climbs. For any of these hikes, snowshoes can be rented for $5 per person.
On Monday, January 15, a Park Educator will be leading a different two-and-a-half-mile snowshoe walk that runs along the Awosting Falls Carriage Road.
The hike leaves from the Peter’s Kill Area and takes hikers on a mild uphill grade, ultimately reaching the 65-foot tall Awosting Falls.
Then the next day, there is another great two-mile snowshoe hike to the Peter’s Kill Area.
Saturday, January 20, there will be an intense three-and-a-half mile snowshoe hike, which will see hikers move through a forest, the edges of the Peter’s Kill stream and then return back to the start using the Lower Awosting Carriage Road.
