This 88-Mile Scenic Byway Will Lead You To Some Of New York’s Best Adventures

Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway offers an 88-mile adventurous drive through beautiful mountain scenery, ideal for hiking and exploring nature.

Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway is one of the most beautiful roads in New York, stretching 88 miles and surrounding the Shawangunk Mountains, as well as linking together several towns and villages in the area. It’s one of the best spots to travel to for an adventurous drive, especially in the fall.

The route was officially designated a New York State Scenic Byway in 2006.

There are several great towns to stop by and explore if you’re up for this mountain exploration: Gardiner, Rochester, Marbletown, Montgomery, Shawangunk, Wawarsing, Ellenville, Crawford and New Paltz are all connected by the scenic byway.

It’s the perfect way to take in all sorts of sights in a gorgeous mountain region full of biological diversity.

If you’re looking to make a trip that will give you access to some great trails and wildlife, this is an ideal mountain route. Over 30,000 acres of nature preserves surround the byway, plus several historic sites.

Try one of the many stellar hiking trails in these mountains, like Beacon Hill, Gertrude’s Nose Loop or the Shawangunk Ridge Trail.

Once you’re done hiking, cool off and enjoy the views at one of the several lakes in the area.

These mountains are only a two-hour drive from New York City, making many of the spots along the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway ideal for day trip for those living in the Big Apple.

The Shawangunks are also a very popular climbing destination, with around 80,000 climbers every year heading to "The Gunks" for access to over 1,000 routes.
