Summers in New York are magical. We've got so much natural beauty in the Empire State that deciding where to go can be overwhelming. Waterfalls? Swimming holes? Beaches? Parks? There's so much to choose from! One state park that we love is Long Island's Robert Moses State Park. Oddly enough, there are actually two Robert Moses State Parks in New York. The other is located on an island in the St. Lawrence River, while the one we'll discuss today has an oceanfront location.
This Robert Moses State Park is located on Fire Island, just south of Long Island. The park was originally named Fire Island State Park when it was established in 1908, and it is the oldest state park in the Long Island area.
The park attracts nearly four million visitors annually, but don't be disturbed by that number! It seems like a lot, but with five miles of beach, there's plenty of space to spread out.
Much of the beach was revitalized after Hurricane Sandy destroyed large portions of the park.
Swimming, surfing, and fishing are all popular here. There's even an 18-hole pitch and putt golf course on the park's west end. With playgrounds and volleyball courts, you'll never run out of things to do.
This is a stunning natural area! Sunrises and sunsets are incredible here.
Robert Moses State Park's many fields provide various amenities. Field 3 is near the water tower (pictured) and has great spots for picnicking and even a gazebo.
Field 5 provides access to the adjacent Fire Island National Seashore. There's a short nature walk that will allow access to the Fire Island lighthouse and nearby towns.
