Now that March has arrived and most of New York has gotten a small taste of warmer weather, we've begun to start itching for outdoor adventures once again. Some of us may be up to the challenge of climbing one of our mountains, others are looking to enjoy an adventure that keeps them low to the ground and requires a bit less effort. Giving you beautiful views of some of our favorite Downstate sights and destinations, you've never experienced anything like this abandoned railroad hike.
Covering 22-miles, the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is considered to be one of America's most iconic rail trails.
The multi-use trail isn't only for hiking enthusiasts, the abandoned railroad hike also attracts bicycle and horseback riders as well as snowshoers and cross-country skiiers during our winter months. The trail was even designated as a National Recreational Trail by the National Parks Service!
Leading you to amazing views, exploring all of the rail trail means that you'll get to pass by beautiful farms, bridges, caverns and plenty of other scenic views.
Keep your eyes peeled along this adventure and you'll be able to spot a variety of wildlife and birds that will make you stop in your tracks.
Right in Ulster County, the trail was once the Wallkill Valley Railroad that ran service until 1977.
The railroad in its prime was used to transport produce and goods from Ulster County farms all the way down to vendors in New York City and also served as a commuter train for the Hudson Valley. Left abandoned for several years, it wouldn't be until 1983 that plans would come together to create a linear park out of the once popular railroad.
The rail trail connects several historic towns and villages of the Hudson Valley, making for a unique adventure.
From the Huguenot District in New Paltz all the way to the historic Stockade District in Kingston, adventurers will be able to step inside history as they explore the area.
And while you'll pass other bridges and amazing views, it's the Rondout Trestle that's become a popular part of the rail trail to visit.
Seen in the picture above is the view from the top of the Rondout Trestle. Spanning 940 feet over Rondout Creek, 150 feet above the water you'll have soaring views Rosendale's Main Street, Rondout Creek and Joppenburgh Mountain! Built back in 1872, it was the highest spanning bridge in all of the United States at the time. You'll often hear people refer to the trestle as the Walkway over the Rondout, offering a more intimate alternative to those who want to avoid more popular destinations like the Walkway over the Hudson.
