New York’s Most Easily Accessible Waterfall Is Hiding In Plain Sight Right In Town

When you think of waterfalls in New York, you might think of long, arduous journeys to reach them. True, these natural wonders are often located deep within woods. Catching a glimpse of them is a great reward, but you don't always have the time or ability for a multi-mile hike. One waterfall in New York that isn't even remotely difficult to reach is the beautiful Shequaga Falls. This stunning 164-foot cascade is right in the middle of town. You can see it without even leaving your car! It's the perfect destination for those with mobility issues or not much time.

The little town of Montour is home to several waterfalls, the largest of which is Shequaga Falls. The name is derived from a Seneca word meaning "tumbling waters."

You'll also hear the falls referred to as Montour Falls.

These waters certainly tumble! The falls are part of Shequaga Creek, which eventually empties into Seneca Lake.

Unlike many waterfalls in New York, Shequaga Falls are fairly consistent throughout the year, so the nice thing about them is that they can typically be viewed no matter what season it is.

The flow does sometimes slow some in summer if there hasn't been much rain, but they rarely dry up completely. Winter and spring tend to be the seasons of heaviest flow.

The falls are right in the center of town and can be viewed from the parking lot. There is a short paved walkway if you do decide you want a closer look.

Many waterfalls in New York are not quite this accessible, so the fact that this one is practically roadside is pretty nifty!

The park where the falls are located is pretty small, but there is typically plenty of roadside parking. There are a few picnic tables and benches if you'd like to sit and enjoy the view.
