But, perhaps you're craving something a little more magical than your average stroll through the woods. Maybe, what it is you're looking for is something that resembles an ethereal slice of heaven. As always, when visiting these natural wonders we want to remind you to be respectful of your surroundings. When taking a visit to this amazing area, it is important to remember the rule of picking up after yourself and leaving no trace behind. You always want to bring out what you've brought in! If any of this is making your feet uncontrollably slide into your hiking boots and lunge you towards the door, then Dover Stone Church is the next place to add to your summer bucket list. It's one of the most incredible cave hikes in New York and you're going to love it. Let's check out this cave hike in New York:
Hiding away in the small area of Dover Plains in Dutchess County, it was just under 15 years ago when the town actually acquired this amazing piece of land.
Previously privately owned up until 2002, the town was eager to acquire this land because of its history and out-of-this-world scenery.
The trails at Dover Stone Church are the perfect paradise for any New York explorer, and are also filled with rich history.
Local legend dating back to the 1600s tell stories of Indians hiding out in the aboveground cave from death by the English. The beautiful area has also been written about in books and was quite the popular attraction back in the 1800s.
Natural white noise and peaceful running water can be heard when exploring the stone church, creating the perfect relaxing environment for anyone visiting.
Maybe it's because our bodies are made up of so much H2O, but for some reason just hearing the sound of water tends to instantaneously relax us, does it not? Standing inside of the cave and hearing the echoes of the running water will mentally bring you to another place and leave you feeling like you've managed to wander into a new world.
Taking you through New York's wilderness, these trails are not for those wearing anything other than a good pair of hiking boots.
While the trails here aren't terribly long in length, they can often times take you through rough terrain and steep areas that your average sneakers may not enjoy experiencing.

While there isn't a designated parking lot for visitors, a New York historical marker will point you in the direction of this hidden gem.
Often missed and overlooked by many, this pathway is hidden between two larger driveways. Most of our residents who have ventured through Dover Stone Church will suggest that you park at the nearby elementary school!
