Explore One of New York’s Deepest, Cleanest Lakes at Seneca Lake State Park

The deepest lake in New York and also one of the most beautiful, Seneca Lake is an easily-accessible destination that makes a perfect upstate day trip.

A day on the water is a great idea in early fall, when the crowds have dissipated a bit from summer and these beautiful waterfronts are much more peaceful and pristine. But many top beach towns start to close up shop during the offseason, which is why we especially love heading to inland lakes where nature is the starring attraction. A perfect example of this is Seneca Lake, the deepest lake in New york and also almost stunningly blue. The largest of the Finger Lakes, it can be found in the small city of Geneva not far from Buffalo, and is easily accessible via the Geneva Lakefront Trail in Seneca Lake State Park. This is one of the best peaceful adventures you can have in the Empire State, and it's well worth the journey to this hidden gem of a state park.

Seneca Lake State Park is one of the most peaceful spots in upstate New York, and its 4.4-mile Geneva Lakefront Trail is an easy hike that will take you around part of the perimeter of one of New York's most beautiful lakes.

Seneca Lake is known for being a popular spot for fishing, as well as a great picnic spot when you want an amazing waterfront view. The trail is paved and is an ideal day hike for people of any skill level, and the park is beautifully maintained.

It's also a great spot for families, with two creative playgrounds that have very different themes. It's a perfect spot for kids to burn off some energy while mom and dad relax!

But easily the biggest star attraction here has to be the lake itself - not only is it New York's deepest lake and one of its biggest, but it's almost unnaturally beautiful at times. It feels like a true remnant of ancient nature from when it was formed by glacial movement eons ago.

The Gorgeous Lazy River In New York Where You’ll Find Us All Summer Long

Now that summer's fully here, it's time to plan our warm-weather adventures. What says holiday more than river rafting in New York? Whether you're a dozing floater, bird watcher, or you bring the party to the water, Ausable Chasm is the perfect place to spend a balmy afternoon.

Tucked in the stunning Adirondack range, Ausable Chasm is an impressive geological formation in its own right. Around 10,000 years ago, receding glaciers gouged deep furrows into Champlain Valley before melting into the Champlain Sea. Eventually, these waters dispersed, and the Ausable River began its long project of carving through the local sandstone. Today, the gorge is 150 feet deep and stretches two miles!

Indigenous nations have lived in the region since time immemorial, but modern tourism at Ausable Chasm began in 1873. From the start, the gorge was a popular spot for outdoor recreation. Its early years saw famous visitors including John D. Rockefeller, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, President William McKinley, and Thomas Edison.

Today, over a hundred thousand people visit the gorge each year. Its enduring fame has earned it the nickname the "Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks."

As a local tourist attraction, you must pay to enjoy Ausable Chasm. These fees help maintain and preserve the site's infrastructure for future use. River raft tours are priced reasonably at $30 per adult and $28 per child over five years old. That said, I recommend the adventure packages, which combine activities like rafting, rappelling, and climbing into a single fee.

While reservations aren't accepted, Ausable Chasm's popularity means arriving early is advised if you want to beat the crowds. If the rigamarole of pay-to-play gets your goat, remember the plus sides: Staff are on-hand to ensure your safety and remove the hassle of lugging rafts from A to B.

Speaking as someone who's forgotten these items on countless river adventures, don't forget to pack your waterproof sunscreen, sunglasses, and plenty of water. If you're interested in exploring the area's beautiful trails, I also recommend bringing hiking shoes!
