Take An Easy Out-And-Back Trail To Enter Another World At Stony Brook Falls In New Jersey

New Jersey is home to several spectacular waterfalls that you can enjoy with no hiking at all. The Great Falls of the Passaic in Paterson and Buttermilk Falls in Layton are two terrific examples. Just drive up and take in the views! If you prefer a bit of exercise or just want to get away from the hustle and bustle for a bit, a short waterfall hike may be a better fit. Take a short and easy hike past two waterfalls and several cascades!

Start at Stokes State Forest. Cross the park road to start following the Stony Brook (brown) trail past the bathroom building.

At .3 miles in, near the start of the Silver Mine (orange) trail, turn left away from that and walk towards the stream – there isn’t a defined path.

You'll find a stepped falls, and if there’s been enough rain, there may be another cascade coming down the hill that spills into the stream.

Return to the Stony Brook (brown) trail and turn right to head back.

Once you're back near the bathroom building, turn left and follow the Stony Brook (brown) trail a short distance to the second waterfall. Finally, retrace your steps to the parking lot.
