Scenic drives are nice but scenic bike rides are even better; they're eco-friendly and great exercise. It will barely feel like a workout when you're pedaling through the prettiest parts of our state. New Jersey has many picturesque paths to choose from but the Henry Hudson Trail is a perfect pick for summer.
The Henry Hudson Bike Trail runs for over 20 miles through New Jersey's coastal towns.
Ride as much or as little of the trail as you'd like. There are several access points.
Though the Garden State Parkway divides the trail into northern and southern sections, there is an on-road route connecting the two. In total, the trail has four main sections.
The Monmouth Heritage Trail runs 5.9 miles from Freehold to Big Brook Park in Marlboro. The next portion of the trail is a serene 4.8-mile journey from Morganville to Matawan. Next, there's the 9.7 miles from Aberdeen Township to Atlantic Highlands.
The shortest, sweetest segment is the 2.1-mile Bayshore Trail. It is paved for its first 0.6-mile; after that, the trail follows the shoreline - the terrain changes to gravel and sand.
Be sure to stop at Popamora Point. Leashed dogs are welcome. The trail is open from sunrise to sunset. Parking and restrooms can be found at Henry Hudson Trail Activity Center on NJ 36.
Travel along this trail and you're in for a real treat with wonderfully diverse scenery. Walk or bike - whatever you enjoy most!
The Henry Hudson Trail was the first rail-trail developed in Monmouth County and it is currently leased and managed by the local park system until 2020. The property is still owned by New Jersey transit, who may restore service at any time. For more information on New Jersey's Henry Hudson Bike Trail, visit NJHiking.com or TrailLink. You'll traverse meadows, forests, and beaches on your journey, so bring your camera if you can.
