New Jersey may be best known for its beaches ("Jersey Shore" fans, hello), but there are also some really beautiful hiking trails in the state. One of the most popular — and certainly the New Jersey hike with the best view — has to be Mount Tammany.
Mount Tammany is part of the Kittatinny Mountains in Warren County, and stands at about 1,526 feet tall. Mount Tammany has three things going for it: 1.) It's a pretty challenging hike. 2.) It's a beautiful forest walk and 3.) You're rewarded with an unforgettable view of the Delaware Water Gap and the Pennsylvania mountains across the water.
The reason Mount Tammany draws hikers from all over is because of its truly exceptional view of the Delaware Water Gap. Seeing the forest, mountains, and water converge is truly a remarkable sight.
Of course, it's also a steep ascent to the peak, and many hikers rate the mountain as "challenging."
Don't worry, though: the loop trail, which is almost 5.5 miles long, takes you through a picturesque forest.
As you soak up the peace and quiet of the forest, you'll undoubtedly see some beautiful sights.
You may even see some wildlife along the way. Hikers have even spotted black bears.
But though the terrain can get tough (definitely exercise caution in the winter), it's all worth it for that view.
There are stunning sights in every direction once you reach the peak.
Mount Tammany is absolutely one of the most rewarding hikes in New Jersey.
So don't be dismissive of the prospect of hiking in New Jersey — there are all sorts of beautiful (and challenging) hikes possible in this beachy state. Once you scale Mount Tammany, you certainly won't doubt that again.
