Are you looking for one of the most challenging hikes you can find in New Jersey? Well, we have good news for you: Despite what you may think, New Jersey has some decently high mountains. Googling "High elevation hikes near me" in New Jersey doesn't usually generate too many hits, but this one is a doozy. And while this trail, in particular, doesn't take you to the highest point in New Jersey, it does offer the highest elevation gain on any New Jersey trail available on AllTrails. It's known as one of the hardest hikes in NJ, but the journey and the views are worth the trek!
So, if you've been wanting to try something long, steep, and challenging, The Windbeam Mountain, Bear Mountain, Board Mountain, and Lake Rickonda Trail, located near Ringwood, is what you're going to want to try.

After all, you do advance up multiple peaks! And while that makes for an oftentimes steep climb, it also means you get more rewards.
On this 13.5-mile out-and-back trail, you're looking at a lot of elevation gain — 4,015 feet total.
The hike might sound long, but there are plenty of pleasant sights along the way, including a river and a lake.
Plus, there's something very refreshing about being in the forest for so long. It's peace and quiet!
And again, the views at the top of each climb make it all worth it.
Make sure to give yourself a break at each peak to properly enjoy the view.
