The Middlesex Greenway is a unique repurposing of the old Lehigh Valley Rail Corridor and has become a beloved spot for hiking, biking, and nature-spotting. Spanning 7.3 miles and considered an easy route, it's one of the best hidden gems in the area. The entry point is just a few minutes' walk from downtown Metuchen, but many residents don't even know it exists—until they see the avid outdoor-lovers on the old rail track as they pass over a bridge. First purchased by Middlesex County in 2002 and developed into a Green space, the Middlesex Greenway is one of the county's most unique hiking trails.

Part of the massive East Coast Greenway, it spans parts of Metuchen, Edison, and Woodbridge with a 10-foot-wide path. This path is frequently used by cyclists and hikers, all of whom enjoy the gorgeous views where suburban meets nature.

This is an easy, smooth trail, and dogs are welcome as long as they're leashed. Don't be surprised if you see some wildlife along the way—this is a great little refuge from the big towns. The unique architecture and a small pond, known as Tommy's Pond, are both within walking distance of the Metuchen access point on the greenway.
