Love Cape Cod? Try This Similar Spot in New Jersey
Looking for a Cape Cod experience closer to home? Discover Spring Lake, NJ, offering beautiful beaches, Victorian charm, and a relaxing coastal vibe.
Looking for a Cape Cod experience without the long drive? Spring Lake, New Jersey, might be just what you need. This charming coastal town offers much of what I love about the Cape, but it’s more accessible for many of us in the mid-Atlantic region.
Spring Lake has that same small-town feel Cape Cod is known for. The streets are lined with Victorian homes and well-kept gardens that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
And just like its northern counterpart, the beach is the star of the show. Spring Lake’s shoreline stretches for two miles, with clean white sand and steady Atlantic waves.
What gives this Monmouth County borough a similar vibe is its slower pace. There’s no boardwalk packed with games and rides like in other Jersey Shore towns. Instead, you’ll find a quiet, non-commercial beach community where people bike around, browse small shops, and enjoy peaceful evenings.
The downtown area features cute boutiques, cozy coffee shops, and local restaurants—reminiscent of spots in Chatham or Falmouth. Spend the morning by the water, grab lunch at St. Stephen’s Green Publick House, and take it easy for the rest of the day.
It even has its own version of the Cape’s freshwater ponds, a scenic inland lake that gives the town its name. The lake has a beautiful walking path around it with wooden footbridges, perfect for sunset strolls.
If you enjoy good food, this beach town delivers. The Breakers is a popular spot for fresh local seafood, and for dessert, Hoffman’s Ice Cream serves up a classic treat.
The best part? It’s much closer for many people, especially those in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. It’s about a 70-mile drive from New York City compared to the 250+ miles to Cape Cod.
While the Cape will always have its own charm, Spring Lake offers a similar coastal escape without the extra travel time. You still get gorgeous beaches, a quaint downtown, and a laid-back atmosphere, with fewer crowds and a shorter drive.
So, if you’re after that New England-style getaway but can’t make it north, consider this Jersey Shore gem. It might be the perfect stand-in for your next coastal retreat.
