New Hampshire's North Country is a wild and beautiful place. It seems set apart from the busier sections of the state to the south, but that's precisely part of its appeal. Hikers that trek in New Hampshire are no doubt familiar with the White Mountains, but a whole new world of outdoor exploration awaits "north of the notches." North Percy Peak, one of the most scenic hikes in New Hampshire, lies within Nash Stream Forest. It's here that you'll find a rugged adventure and spectacular views.
The Percy Peaks (R) are a pair of conical summits that are prominent landmarks visible from many areas in the towns of Groveton and Stark. Only North Percy is accessible by official hiking trails.
The ascent of Percy Peaks Trail climbs through beautiful forest, steeply at times, and is punctuated with interesting rock features.
A large glacial boulder along Percy Peaks Trail meets hikers at 1.0 miles. This also serves as a landmark for the steeper part of the climb.
From neighboring South Percy Peak, the open ledges that Percy Peaks Trail follows appear impossible to climb.
The final 0.2 mile to the summit is up very steep ledges with exposure that may be uncomfortable for some. While the ledge is very grippy, this hike is not recommended if wet.
The strenuous ascent to the summit of North Percy is rewarded with panoramic views in all directions from its bare top.
An ecosystem of fragile plants survive and thrive in the harsh exposure of North Percy's summit. Hikers need to take care to walk on the ledge at all times to avoid damaging these plants.
I've hiked North Percy Peak numerous times and can personally attest to its beauty. I'm sure you will love it too! A trail map can be purchased throughout the Cohos Trail Association and more information is available at the NH Division of Forests and Lands and in the guidebook, "New Hampshire's 52 With A View: A Hiker's Guide" (full disclosure: I'm the author).
Before you head out for this and other scenic hikes in New Hampshire, be sure you are equipped with the ten essentials for a safe trip. Reaching the summit is only half the journey.
