Plot A Course For Bald Eagles On This Wild New Hampshire Adventure Cruise
Spending as much time as I do outdoors, I've seen my fair share of the local wildlife around these parts, including raptors and other birds of prey. Bald eagles, however, have proven to be elusive; I've rarely spotted them. So when I heard about this New Hampshire wildlife cruise run by Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness, my ears perked up. And if you love seeing wildlife in its natural habitat, this cruise might be perfect for you too.
New Hampshire's Squam Lakes are a haven for tourism to the state, attracting thousands of visitors each year to appreciate its natural beauty.
Visitors of another kind have also flocked to the lake with the arrival of a pair of bald eagles, who first came here in 2003.
Since then, the bald eagle population in New Hampshire has steadily increased. In 2020, New Hampshire Audubon counted more than 100 eagles statewide.
If you've never had the opportunity to spot one of these magnificent birds in the wild, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness offers the chance to do so.
The Center's adventure cruise is guided by a naturalist and sails a route to parts of the lake where these majestic birds are likely to be spotted.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the recovery of the eagle population in New Hampshire and what the future might hold for them.
The cruises are 90 minutes long and advance reservations are required. This is a great excursion for older kids, though it is not recommended for children under 5.
This is one New Hampshire wildlife cruise like no other and is a chance to experience a species on the rebound in a critical ecosystem. For more information and to book your reservation, visit Squam Lakes Natural Science Center for cruise dates and times.
