The Natural Wonder In New Hampshire That Becomes Even More Enchanting In The Wintertime
Winter in New Hampshire often transforms our already beautiful scenery into something else entirely. Some might say to keep the snow in the mountains where it belongs and I would agree with that. Not only are the snow-capped summits beautiful, but so are the more hidden destinations within the forest. One natural wonder in New Hampshire that is a bit off the beaten track is Beede Falls in Sandwich.
Tiny but scenic Beede Falls in Sandwich is a popular swimming hole where the Bearcamp River slides over a smooth granite ledge.
In winter, however, Beede Falls transforms into a natural sculpture of snow and ice as the river pauses.
The easiest approach to Beede Falls is parking at Mead Conservation Center at the end of Diamond Ledge Rd. From there, follow signs for Bearcamp River Trail to reach the falls in 0.6 mi.
The walk along Bearcamp River Trail makes for a pleasant winter stroll with no steep or difficult sections.
Along the walk to Beede Falls, hikers will pass Cow Cave. Legend has it that a local cow spent an entire winter inside this natural shelter.
To see the full effect of the picturesque falls in winter, one bust climb behind the frozen cascade (use caution).
Depending on the available light, the scene from behind the falls can present a kaleidoscope of brilliant color.
Beede Falls is just one natural wonder in New Hampshire that you should visit. For more information, consult the AMC White Mountain Guide or visit NH Family Hikes.
