Fuller Mansion in North Hampton, New Hampshire is worth a drive and one to consider while spring is here. We've been thinking a lot about all the ways we plan on enjoying the outdoors when the warm weather arrives. Of course, there are all the trails we know and love, as well as lots of lakes and rivers. But we're also ready for some color and that's why we're dreaming of the flowers that are blooming!
Fuller Mansion New Hampshire is one of the very last working formal estate gardens of the 20th century.
The lavish gardens have been around since 1927
and were born out of a desire for natural beauty.
Businessman and Massachusetts politician Alvan T. Fuller commissioned landscape architect Arthur A. Shurtleff to design the first garden behind his summer home.
The gardens continued to expand over the decades.
The Fullers didn't go into the pretty gardens very much but loved looking at them from the windows in the house. And they especially loved seeing members of the public enjoying them who are still welcome to one of the best places to visit in New Hampshire in spring.
And with the state's Monarch butterfly migration, there's also a good chance you'll spot some beautiful new friends enjoying the flowers.
The entire area is full of greenery, with tons of small footpaths on which to get lost.
The Japanese garden tends to bloom in May and is one of the most peaceful places on the grounds.
It's the perfect way to welcome spring in New Hampshire.
The English perennial plantings are also in bloom from spring all the way through the fall.
These bloom in late June and keep going through October.
One of the showpieces of the garden is the hundreds of varieties of roses that exist throughout.
And the seaside location adds even more beautiful ways to enjoy the fresh air.
This is definitely one of the areas in the state that we look forward to reopening all year long.
