Here Are The Best Times And Places To Watch The Perseid Meteor Shower In Nevada
Nevada offers a variety of stunning natural wonders, from unique rock formations to beautiful waterfalls and scenic vistas.
It's that time of year again! The famous Perseid Meteor Shower is expected to make an appearance early next week, and it's an event that you definitely don't want to miss. This annual spectacle actually takes place throughout the month, but it's supposed to peak from August 11 through August 13. We're lucky enough to live in a state where meteor shower viewing is at its finest, so be sure to take advantage of this incredible moment and make some plans to see it for yourself.
The one and only Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the most highly anticipated events among astronomy enthusiasts, and for good reason. Every year, the Perseids put on a fantastic show across the summer night sky, and this year is looking to be no different.
The greatest number of meteors are expected to be visible on the mornings of August 11, 12, and 13. However, an especially bright moon will probably mask many of these beautiful meteors from view during the morning. But hope is not lost!
If you'd really like a pristine view of the Perseids as they launch across the sky, we suggest viewing them during the evening of August 12 and into the morning of August 13. This time period will boast better visibility and therefore the sight of the meteors is bound to be even more astonishing.
The Perseids can be easily seen from most of the Northern Hemisphere, making it a favorite for summer meteor watching. However, living in Nevada provides an extra perk to watching meteor showers—extra dark skies. Darker skies mean better visibility, and it's the perfect environment for gazing at the night sky.
For best results, head to a remote area of Nevada (that shouldn't be too hard to find.) Some popular stargazing and meteor watching spots include Great Basin National Park, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Tahoe, and Spring Mountain Ranch State Park—just to name a few.
Although morning and late at night are the most popular time to view the Perseids, there's really no bad time to see them. The Perseid meteors are known to start flying around mid-evening and continue long into the night. This means that even those who are "early to bed, early to rise" will have a chance at viewing this stellar event.
If you're new to meteor watching, you'll want to be aware of a few things that will make your experience the best it can be. Although no special equipment is needed to see the Perseids, you'll want to give yourself plenty of time to watch since your eyes can take up to 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
And lastly, be patient! Meteors are known to come in random spurts and you may find yourself waiting a while in between. Take your time, relax, and enjoy watching Mother Nature do its thing.
