The Iconic Trail in Nevada Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park is a global treasure. Tucked away in the Mojave Desert, it's comprised of 40,000 acres of bright red Aztec sandstone, ancient petrified trees, and petroglyphs that have been around for over 2,000 years. It's easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer size and scope of this place, but luckily, there's a trail that offers a perfect introduction to this epic landscape. Fire Wave Trail is an easy, 1.3-mile trek that reveals the park's jaw-dropping rock formations and unexpected colors.

Fire Wave Trail is an extraordinarily popular trail in Nevada, and it's no secret why. In just a little over a mile, hikers will be introduced to some of the state's most iconic scenery. However, if you prefer a little seclusion while you hike, you might try visiting early in the morning. Not only will you beat the rush but you'll also get to see the rocks at sunrise, a phenomenon that underscores their vibrant pink and red hues.

To start your adventure, you'll look for the trail directly across from the parking lot. This easy-to-hike out-and-back trail begins with sandy terrain for the first half before becoming decidedly rockier. Sturdy hiking boots, a sun hat, and extra water are absolutely essential on this trail.

Before long, you'll have reached the namesake attraction, the Fire Wave, which can look dramatically different depending on what time of day you visit. The layers of color you'll notice are the result of striated rock, the effect of compressing sand dunes over a very long time. Once you've reached this turnaround point, you can either trace your steps back to the parking lot or continue on to complete the Seven Wonders Loop Trail. If you have the time for it, it won't add too much length to your hike, clocking in at just under two miles round trip.

Fire Wave Trail is also a great option for any little hikers in your crew. Just be aware of dramatic temperature changes; it's not recommended to hike this trail in the middle of a warm day and alternatively, temperatures can drop drastically after sunset. Be sure to stop by the visitor's center for additional information on how best to prepare for your hike.
